UHMW-PE crane pads are built for years of daily service. They do not rot, swell, warp or split. The material is chemically inert and weatherproof. But like any piece of safety-critical kit, they still need a basic inspection routine and a bit of storage discipline. This is what to check, how to clean them, and when a pad has reached the end of its working life.
The 30-Second Pre-Lift Check
Every pad should get a quick visual before each lift. It takes half a minute and it catches the damage that matters. You are looking for anything that changes how the pad will spread load or sit under the outrigger float.
Flatness
Lay the pad on a flat surface. It should sit flush. A permanent dish or flat spot means it has been overloaded at some point. Retire it.
Surface damage
Shallow scuffs are normal. Deep gouges, sharp cuts, or cracks longer than 50mm are not. Retire the pad.
Recess area (recessed pads)
Check the chamfer and recessed float well for cracking or material loss. Damage here can prevent the stabiliser pin from seating properly.
Contamination
Heavy mud, ice or concrete build-up changes how the pad sits. Clear it before the lift. UHMW-PE cleans off easily.
Signs a Pad is Past It
UHMW-PE fails visibly. Unlike timber, there is no hidden rot, no internal weakness, no surprise split under load. If a pad has a problem, you can see it. These are the retirement triggers.

Age alone is not a retirement trigger. A ten-year-old UHMW-PE pad that passes a visual inspection is still fit for service. The failure mode is mechanical damage, not material fatigue or UV degradation.
Cleaning
UHMW-PE does not absorb water, oil or most site chemicals, so cleaning is straightforward. A hose and stiff brush deals with most of it. Mild detergent for stubborn grime. Wipe off diesel or hydraulic oil with a rag. It sits on the surface, it does not soak in.
You do not need solvents, thinners or pressure washers. They will not damage the pad but they are unnecessary. The material is self-lubricating and most contamination comes off with water.
Storage
This is where UHMW-PE saves you the most compared to timber. No undercover storage, no dry conditions, no rot protection. A pallet in the yard is fine.
Outdoor storage
Fine. Material is UV resistant and weatherproof.
Stacking
Stack flat on a pallet. Avoid stacking on edge for long periods with very large pads.
Labelling
Mark with company name or asset tag. Pads get mixed up on multi-contractor sites.
Expected Lifespan
Realistic numbers based on how the pads are actually used:

The pad usually comes out of service because it takes mechanical damage. A forklift runs over it, it gets dropped off a truck, it gets overloaded once. Not because the material wore out.
Flat vs Recessed Wear Points
The two pad styles wear differently. Knowing where to look saves time on inspection.
Flat pads
Corners take the most punishment. Most flat pad retirements are corner damage from drops, forklift strikes, or being dragged on concrete.
Recessed pads
The chamfer around the recessed float well is the key wear point. Check this area specifically. If the edge is cracking, retire the pad even if the rest looks fine.
Keeping Records
For commercial fleets, a simple inspection log protects the company. A date, a sign-off, a note of any pads retired that month. Nothing fancy. It covers you under BS 7121 and LOLER if an incident is ever investigated.
The minimum standard: visual inspection before each lift (by the operator), formal inspection every 6 months (by a competent person), written record kept with the lift plan documentation. This is the same structure you would use for slings, shackles and other lifting accessories.
