Spreader Plates and
Spreader Pads
UHMW-PE pad options from compact MEWP sizes to 3000mm Heavy Lift plates. Manufacturer-listed pad capacities reach 315 tonnes on the Heavy Lift range. Select the exact product using the verified maximum reaction, required bearing area and assessed ground capacity.
What Are Spreader Plates
Outrigger Spreader Plates for Crane Operations
Spreader plates are intended to increase the contact area beneath an outrigger foot and reduce calculated ground pressure. They do not by themselves prove ground suitability or crane stability; the lift plan must verify the maximum reaction, bearing area, supporting ground and exact pad capacity.
The terms "spreader plate", "spreader pad", "outrigger pad", and "crane pad" are often used interchangeably in this context. Always select from the exact product specification rather than relying on the name alone.

UHMW-PE vs Steel
UHMW-PE Compared with Steel Plate
UHMW-PE can reduce corrosion and manual-handling concerns, but material alone does not determine suitability. Check the exact product weight, capacity, stiffness, foot geometry and supporting conditions.
- Lower material density than steel; plan handling from the exact product weight
- Bearing distribution depends on pad stiffness, float geometry and supporting ground
- UHMW-PE does not rust; inspect for damage, deformation and contamination
- Surface finish and handles vary by product; check the specification
- Use the stated lifting points and a suitable handling plan for the pad weight
- Do not assume manual handling is suitable; many pad sizes require mechanical assistance
UHMW-PE vs Timber
UHMW-PE Compared with Timber Mats
UHMW-PE avoids rot and timber splinters, but it does not remove the need for inspection, correct support or a competent selection.
- Does not splinter like timber; withdraw any pad showing damage or deformation
- Low water absorption and no timber rot
- Use only within the manufacturer's stated conditions and inspect before use
- Single-piece products have no timber fixings; modular layouts require their stated connections
- Plan handling from the exact product weight, not the material name
- No blanket service life applies; inspect before every use and store as specified

Common Questions
Spreader Plate FAQs
Are spreader plates the same as outrigger pads or crane pads?
The terms are often used interchangeably for pads placed under outriggers or stabiliser feet. The exact construction and capacity still matter, so select from the product specification rather than the name alone.
What size spreader plate do I need?
Use the verified maximum outrigger reaction, assessed ground bearing capacity and float footprint. The Pad Size Calculator is a screening aid; the final selection must be confirmed in the lift plan.
When does a job need a Heavy Lift plate instead of a standard pad?
Assess Heavy Lift plates where no regular Premium pad satisfies both the verified reaction and required bearing area. The range runs from 1500mm to 3000mm with manufacturer-listed pad capacities from 126 to 315 tonnes. Crane gross tonnage alone does not select the pad.
Can UHMW-PE spreader plates be used on tarmac and concrete?
They can be used where a competent assessment confirms the surface and supporting layers can withstand the design pressure. A hard-looking surface does not by itself prove adequate bearing capacity.
How fast is delivery?
The standard range up to 1200mm ships next day on UK orders placed before 2pm. Heavy Lift plates 1500mm and above are quoted enquiry-led with confirmed lead time at the point of order, typically two to three weeks. Pallet freight quoted per delivery on Heavy Lift.
Do you offer trade pricing for plant hire and crane companies?
Yes. Volume orders, fleet standardisation, and Heavy Lift specifications all qualify for trade pricing. Call 07752 806706 or email sales@cranepadsolutionsuk.co.uk with your requirements and we'll come back same working day.
Ready to Order?
