UHMW-PE crane pads need very little maintenance compared to timber. But there are still a few things worth checking to make sure your pads are safe and performing properly.
Before Each Use — What to Check
Load Bearing Faces
Look for cracks, deep gouges, missing material, permanent deformation or damage around the load-bearing faces and edges. Minor surface marking can occur in service, but any damage that could affect load transfer should be quarantined and assessed before reuse.
Carry Handles
Check rope, webbing, chain and steel lifting points for wear, damage or looseness. Do not lift or carry a pad by a damaged handle, and follow the handling method on the product specification.
Pad Sits Flat
If the pad rocks on a flat surface or has a visible bend, it is not distributing load evenly. It needs replacing.
Modular Mat Bolt Holes
Check holes are clean and not elongated. Ovalled holes mean mats will not sit tight against each other and load transfer between sections is compromised.
Cleaning
UHMW-PE is non-porous so it does not absorb dirt, oil or water. A pressure washer or a bucket of soapy water and a stiff brush is all you need. Mud, clay and concrete residue all wash off easily.
If you have oil or hydraulic fluid on the pad surface, clean it off before the next use. Not because it damages the material, but because an oily pad surface can make the outrigger foot slip.
Storage
Store pads flat on a level surface, preferably indoors or under cover. Do not leave them leaning at an angle for long periods. UHMW-PE does not absorb water and the Heavy Lift specifications state that the material is UV-stabilised for outdoor operational use, but covered storage helps maximise service life.
Transport
Strap pads down on the truck or van. The manufacturer sheet lists the 1200×1200×50mm Premium pad at 70kg. In a sudden stop, an unsecured pad is a serious hazard. Stack pads flat and restrain them using a method suitable for the vehicle, pad weight and approved lifting points.
When to Retire a Pad
There is no universal replacement interval: service life depends on loading, handling, storage, environment and damage history. Remove a pad from service if it is cracked, permanently bowed, has missing material, damaged lifting points or elongated connections, or no longer sits and loads as intended. Quarantine uncertain pads and obtain manufacturer or competent-person advice before reuse.
Minor surface scratches and scuffs are normal. The pad is doing its job on rough ground, gravel, tarmac and concrete. It will pick up marks. That is wear, not damage.

UHMW-PE
Clean, inspect before use and store flat under cover where practical. UHMW-PE does not rot or absorb water, but pads still require inspection for damage, deformation and lifting-point condition.
Timber
Inspect for splitting, rot, water damage, loose fixings and fibre separation. Service life varies with timber type, construction, loading, storage and site conditions; replace according to condition and the applicable design or supplier guidance.
