Spreader Plates and
Spreader Pads
UHMW-PE spreader plates for cranes, outriggers, and heavy plant. From 300mm MEWP pads up to 3000mm Heavy Lift plates rated to 315 tonnes. Lighter than steel, stronger than timber, built for repeated site use.
What Are Spreader Plates
Outrigger Spreader Plates for Crane Operations
Spreader plates sit underneath crane outrigger feet to distribute the point load across a wider area of ground. This prevents the outrigger punching through soft surfaces, reduces ground bearing pressure, and keeps the crane stable during lifting operations.
The terms "spreader plate", "spreader pad", "outrigger pad", and "crane pad" are used interchangeably across the industry. All CPS pads function as spreader plates and spreader pads. They spread the outrigger load to keep your crane stable and your site safe.

UHMW-PE vs Steel
Why Polymer Beats Steel Plate
Steel spreader plates are heavy, awkward to handle on site, and concentrate load at the edges rather than distributing it evenly.
- Up to 80% lighter than equivalent steel plate
- Distributes load evenly across the full pad surface
- Will not rust, corrode, or degrade with weather exposure
- Textured surface grips the outrigger foot
- Safe to handle on site with no sharp edges
- One person can carry and position most sizes
UHMW-PE vs Timber
Why Polymer Beats Timber Mats
Timber spreader mats have been used for decades but come with ongoing maintenance costs and safety risks that UHMW-PE eliminates.
- Will not split, crack, or splinter under load
- Zero water absorption, no swelling or rot
- Consistent performance in all weather conditions
- No nails, bolts, or fixings to fail
- Lighter than equivalent hardwood
- Longer service life with no maintenance required

Common Questions
Spreader Plate FAQs
Are spreader plates the same as outrigger pads or crane pads?
Yes. The terms "spreader plate", "outrigger pad", and "crane pad" all describe the same thing: a load-spreading plate placed under a crane outrigger or stabiliser foot. Different parts of the industry default to different terms. CPS sells the full range under any of these names.
What size spreader plate do I need?
Three inputs decide it. Outrigger leg load in tonnes, ground bearing capacity in kN/m², and the outrigger float footprint. Use the Pad Size Calculator for an instant recommendation, or call us with your machine model and ground type.
When does a job need a Heavy Lift plate instead of a standard pad?
When outrigger reaction exceeds roughly 100 tonnes per leg, or when soft ground means a 1200mm pad won't keep ground pressure within safe limits. All-terrain cranes 250t and above will normally fall in the Heavy Lift band on full duty. Heavy Lift plates start at 1500mm and run up to 3000mm, rated to 315 tonnes.
Can UHMW-PE spreader plates be used on tarmac and concrete?
Yes. On hard standing, the pad's job shifts from spreading load to protecting the surface and preventing the outrigger float from punching through or marking the ground. UHMW-PE is significantly less likely to damage tarmac than steel float plates.
How fast is delivery?
The standard range up to 1200mm ships next day on UK orders placed before 2pm. Heavy Lift plates 1500mm and above are quoted enquiry-led with confirmed lead time at the point of order, typically two to three weeks. Pallet freight quoted per delivery on Heavy Lift.
Do you offer trade pricing for plant hire and crane companies?
Yes. Volume orders, fleet standardisation, and Heavy Lift specifications all qualify for trade pricing. Call 07752 806706 or email sales@cranepadsolutionsuk.co.uk with your requirements and we'll come back same working day.
