Modular Crane Mat SystemsLoad Spreading Platforms For Soft Ground

When your pad can't take the weight, or the ground is too soft to hold it, interlocking UHMW-PE mats build a load spreading platform of any footprint. They work under the pads you already have. For crawler cranes, piling rigs and heavy plant on soft or made ground.

The System

One Pad, Any Platform

Modular crane mats are tough interlocking UHMW-PE sections you lay down and clip together to build a solid platform under the foot. Think of it as a snowshoe for a crane: the same heavy load spread over a much bigger area, so the machine stays on top of soft ground instead of sinking through it. Where a single pad spreads one foot, a modular platform spreads the weight across a much larger area, beds into soft or uneven ground and carries crawler tracks. Build it to any size by adding sections, with a topper pad on top sized to the outrigger load.

Is It Right For You?

When Modular Is the Answer

Plastic, aluminium and timber all spread load. Here is the honest version of when modular UHMW is the right call, so you buy on the job and the budget, not the sales pitch.

You Want to Own It

Buy it once and keep it in the fleet. No hire charge every job, no return, no rehire uplift.

Soft or Uneven Ground

UHMW moulds to lumpy, made up ground and springs back. It beds in instead of rocking on the high spots.

Cost Matters

Significantly less than aluminium for the same platform. Timber is cheap but rots and splits.

It Takes a Beating

Will not dent, rot or corrode. Drop it, leave it out in the weather, use it again next week.

Protecting the Surface

Kinder to slabs, paving and finished surfaces than steel or aluminium.

Hand Laid, No Plant

Carry the sections by hand and build the platform on site. Fits in the van.

When to look at aluminium instead. On hard, flat ground where you need the maximum engineered load spread from the smallest footprint, or where a temporary works engineer needs certified mat data, aluminium earns its premium, and you will usually hire it. For everyday lifts, soft or uneven ground, and kit you want to own, modular UHMW wins on value and practicality.

Modular or heavy lift? Two different systems. A heavy lift pad is a single solid slab for a concentrated load on one spot, set down with plant. Modular builds a larger platform from sections you lay by hand, for coverage over soft or uneven ground and crawler tracks. See the heavy lift range →

Where It Works

Built for Soft and Made Ground

Crawler Cranes

Spread track loads across a continuous platform on weak or variable ground.

Piling & Foundation Rigs

Stable working platforms for rigs on made ground, fill and soft sites.

Large Outrigger Spreads

Where a single pad is not enough area, link sections to hit the bearing figure.

Bridging Soft Spots

Span localised weak areas and services without excavation or hardstanding.

Temporary Access

Lay a route for plant across grass, verges and sensitive surfaces.

Heavy Plant Standings

Reusable, weatherproof platforms that do not rot between jobs like timber.

Specification

Sizes & Capacities

Sections in 1500mm and 1800mm, 50mm thick. Solid and interlocking formats. Indicative section ratings span roughly 60 to 140 tonnes depending on size and configuration. Treat the figures as a planning guide and confirm the platform in your lift plan and with your temporary works engineer. Link sections to build a platform to any footprint your lift requires.

Manufactured from UHMW-PE polymer. Resistant to water, oil, chemicals and corrosion. Will not split, rot or absorb moisture like timber, and will not corrode like steel or aluminium. Integrated handling points for safe positioning.

Common Questions

Modular Mat FAQ

Are modular crane mats the same as a multi mat system?

Broadly, yes. Modular crane mats are also called multi mat or interlocking mat systems. They are sections that link together to build a continuous load spreading platform. Ours are UHMW-PE rather than aluminium or timber.

How many sections do I need?

It depends on the load and the ground. Use the ground bearing calculator to work out the platform area you need, then link enough sections to cover it, or call us and we will size it with you.

Can I mix sizes and interlocking sections?

Yes. Solid and interlocking 1500mm and 1800mm sections work together. Interlocking sections key into each other for a continuous surface where you need it.

Why UHMW-PE instead of aluminium or timber?

UHMW-PE costs significantly less than aluminium, will not rot, split or absorb water like timber, and moulds to uneven ground rather than rocking on it. Aluminium is the choice where you need maximum engineered load spread on hard, flat ground. See when modular is the right call above.
