Choosing the Right Pad
What size crane pad do I need?
Pad size depends on three factors: maximum outrigger reaction force (from your crane duty chart), ground bearing capacity (from a ground assessment or conservative assumption), and any existing spread already under the outrigger foot. Our free Pad Size Calculator works this out for you in seconds. If you don't have all the figures, call us and we'll work from conservative assumptions.
What is the difference between round and square crane pads?
Square pads give you the maximum contact area for a given pad size — more spread per millimetre of width. They're the best choice where you need to maximise load distribution or align the pad edge with a kerb, wall or excavation. Round pads provide consistent load spread in all directions and are simpler to position under a standard outrigger foot. Both are manufactured from the same premium UHMW-PE material.
When should I use modular crane pads instead of a single pad?
Modular interlocking pads are designed for higher loads, weaker ground, or sites where you need a scalable system. If a single pad doesn't provide enough spread area for the outrigger load and ground conditions, modular sections combine to create a larger footprint. They're also practical for fleets — carry a set of sections and configure the spread area to suit each job.
What is the CPS Essential range?
The CPS Essential range is designed for lighter duty applications — MEWPs, scissorlifts, cherry pickers, HIABs and small plant. Same UHMW-PE material as our premium range, sized and rated for machines that don't generate the outrigger loads of a mobile crane. A practical, cost-effective option when you don't need a heavy-duty pad.
Are your crane pads the same as spreader plates?
Yes. Spreader plates, outrigger pads and crane pads all refer to the same product. They sit under a crane or plant outrigger foot to spread the point load across a wider area of ground. At CPS, all our pads function as spreader plates — we use engineering-grade UHMW-PE to distribute outrigger loads safely and effectively.
Material & Specifications
What are crane pads made from?
Our pads are manufactured from UHMW-PE (Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene) — a high-density engineered composite. It's the same family of material used in industrial wear liners, dock fenders and heavy-duty conveyor components. It won't split, rot or absorb moisture like timber, and won't mark finished surfaces like steel.
Are UHMW crane pads better than timber?
Yes, in almost every measurable way. Timber absorbs water, splits, rots and loses structural integrity over time. UHMW-PE is resistant to water, oil, chemicals and corrosion. It maintains its rated capacity across its service life, doesn't need treating or replacing as frequently, and is significantly lighter per unit of load capacity. The only advantage of timber is upfront cost — but it needs replacing far more often.
How much weight can a crane pad hold?
Load ratings depend on pad size and thickness. Our range covers 5 tonnes up to 200 tonnes depending on configuration. Every product page on our site shows the independently rated load capacity for that specific pad. Use our Pad Size Calculator to match pad size to your outrigger load.
Do your pads have rope handles?
Yes. All our pads come with integrated rope handles for safe manual positioning on site. Selected larger sizes also include a built-in levelling indicator to confirm the pad is sitting flat before load is applied.
Ground Bearing & Load Distribution
What is ground bearing pressure and why does it matter?
Ground bearing pressure is the force per unit area applied to the ground surface beneath the outrigger pad. If it exceeds the ground's bearing capacity, the ground fails — settlement, rotation or instability during a lift. The pad's job is to spread the outrigger load over a larger area to keep ground pressure within safe limits. Our Ground Bearing Calculator lets you check this before you lift.
How do I calculate outrigger pad size for my crane?
You need the maximum outrigger reaction force from your crane's duty chart and the ground bearing capacity at your site. Divide the load by the allowable ground pressure to get the minimum pad area required. Our Pad Size Calculator does this automatically — enter your figures and it recommends a pad from our range.
What ground bearing capacity should I assume if I don't have a survey?
Without a formal ground investigation, use a conservative assumption. Typical values: firm clay or compacted gravel — 100–150 kN/m²; soft clay or loose fill — 50–75 kN/m²; made ground or recently backfilled — 25–50 kN/m². When in doubt, go lower. If you're unsure, call us on 07752 806706 and we'll help you work from safe assumptions.
Ordering & Delivery
Do your prices include VAT?
Prices on our site are shown excluding VAT. VAT at 20% is added at checkout. The final price including VAT is shown before you complete your order.
How quickly can you deliver?
We dispatch from UK stock. Most orders ship same day if placed before the cut-off. Nationwide delivery is included as standard. If you need pads urgently for a job, call us and we'll confirm availability and delivery timescale before you order.
Is there a minimum order?
No minimum order. Buy one pad or a hundred. Volume orders, repeat supply and trade accounts are all available. Call us for trade pricing on larger quantities.
Do you offer trade accounts?
Yes. If you're a crane hire company, plant operator or contractor buying regularly, we can set up a trade account with agreed pricing and terms. Call 07752 806706 or email sales@cranepadsolutionsuk.co.uk to discuss.
Applications
Can I use crane pads for MEWPs and scissorlifts?
Yes. Our CPS Essential range is specifically designed for MEWPs, scissorlifts, cherry pickers and similar access platforms. These machines have lower outrigger loads than mobile cranes, so you don't need a heavy-duty pad. The Essential range gives you the right level of support at a lower cost.
Are your pads suitable for HIABs and lorry-mounted cranes?
Yes. HIABs and lorry-mounted cranes are one of our most common applications. The outrigger loads are typically in the 5–30 tonne range depending on the crane and lift radius. Our round and square pads in the 600mm–800mm range cover most HIAB setups. Check the load rating on the product page against your crane's outrigger reaction force.
Can crane pads be used on tarmac, concrete or paved surfaces?
Yes. UHMW-PE pads will not mark, scratch or damage finished surfaces the way steel plates or timber can. They're regularly used on tarmac, concrete, block paving, car parks and other surfaces where ground protection matters as much as load spread.
