The Key Difference — Bearing Area
For the same nominal size, square pads give more bearing area than round pads.

If ground bearing pressure is the primary concern, square pads are the more efficient choice. The same footprint gives you 27% more ground contact every time.
When to Choose Square Pads
Choose square when you need maximum bearing area, when you need to align the pad edge with a kerb, wall or excavation, or when the lift plan specifies minimum pad area and a square pad meets the requirement where a round would not. Square pads are the default choice for mobile cranes, concrete pumps and heavy plant where load spread is the priority.
When to Choose Round Pads
Round pads are preferred where the outrigger foot is round and can rotate under load. The circular shape means load distribution stays even regardless of which direction the outrigger foot faces. If the outrigger swings or the float rotates during setup, a round pad handles this naturally. Square pads can rock or concentrate load on a corner if the foot is not aligned.
Round pads also sit better on uneven or undulating ground. The absence of corners means there is no single point where the pad edge meets the surface at an angle.
Flat vs Recessed — The Other Choice
Flat Pads
Sit under the outrigger foot. Universal. Simple to position. No risk of the foot slipping off on firm ground. The right choice for most applications.
Recessed Pads
Machined dish that locates the outrigger foot and prevents sliding. Worth using when working on slopes, uneven ground, or where the machine will be repositioned with the outriggers deployed. Available in the Essential Range for smaller machines.
