How to Choose the Right Outrigger Pad (And Avoid Costly Ground Damage)
Outrigger pads do one job: spread load across a larger surface area to reduce the pressure going into the ground beneath your crane. Get the size or rating wrong and you risk ground failure, instability and a very expensive problem.
Here's what to work through before you order.
Start with the outrigger load, not the crane weight
Total crane weight is not the right figure to use. You need the maximum outrigger reaction force, which you'll find in the crane's duty chart. Under load and at radius, that number can be significantly higher than you'd expect. If you don't have it, get it from the operator or manufacturer before specifying a pad.
Ground conditions matter as much as load
Concrete and well-compacted hardcore can take a lot more pressure than grass, made ground or anything soft or wet. The weaker the ground, the larger the pad footprint you need to keep pressure within safe limits. Don't assume a pad that's worked fine on a hardstanding will perform the same way on soft ground.
Bigger surface area means lower ground pressure
It's straightforward physics. A larger pad spreads the same load across more square metres, which reduces pressure at ground level. If you're working on marginal ground, or the lift is heavy or long duration, size up. The cost difference between pad sizes is small. The cost of ground failure isn't.
Round or square — which do you need?
Round pads are the most common choice for crane hire. They're easy to position, simple to stack for additional height and work well across the widest range of applications. Square pads offer a larger surface area for a given footprint dimension and are often specified where the stabiliser layout suits that shape better. Both do the same job. The correct size and rating matter more than the shape.
When modular pads make sense
On heavier lifts or softer ground, a single pad sometimes won't provide enough load distribution. Modular crane pad systems can be stacked or combined to increase surface area and height, giving you more flexibility on difficult ground. They're commonly used on larger operations where a standard single pad isn't sufficient.
The mistakes that cause problems
Using total crane weight instead of outrigger load is the most common error. Beyond that: ignoring soft or uneven ground, placing pads on slopes without levelling first, continuing to use pads that are cracked or damaged, and going for the cheapest option without checking the load rating. None of these are worth the risk.
